FEBRUARY SUBSCRIPTION
El Mirador, Guatemala
This coffee came to us in a time of need! We were in-between coffee releases, waiting for several shipments to arrive. Unfortunately, shipments take 4-9 weeks and things can get very complicated to predict!
Our importer friends at Caravela recommended a coffee lot from El Mirador that has been tasting great this season, and sent us some samples to assess. We were initially just happy to have a coffee fill a spot, but after the first roasts of it we were genuinely so blown away with the flavour profile that we called Caravela back and ordered double our original order!
We had issues with the supply of Guatemalan coffees over the last year due to the aggressive buying strategies of some exporters while coffee production was low and the prices were high.
The beauty of this lot is it is made up of a small collective that are all from the same micro region, which means there is always a steady flow of this flavour profile and the farmers are also selling all of their coffee, of various grades, to be split up and sold to the appropriate buyers. This makes sure the high grades fetch large premiums, but also their lower grades are never sold at a loss. This ensures a profitable pricing structure for all the farmers inside the cooperative.
We are constantly thinking about how we are engaging in the coffee industry and only want to act in a way that truly lifts up all those in the supply chain. Coffee producers are notoriously extorted and we are passionate to stop this and prove there is a way to buy coffee that allows producers to be paid fairly for the coffees that we love. This lot has a detailed traceability breakdown, paired with information from a team in Guatemala that sets pricing to incorporate regional costs of production, seasonal challenges and the cost of living. All these factors need to be taken into consideration when we buy coffee at Made of Many, so we know we are paying enough. Small steps that make the future of coffee seem bright.
