JULY SUBSCRIPTION
Hey!
Hope you are doing really well.
Faber Mulcue, Colombia
This coffee brings us full circle. We offered Faber Mulcue early in our subscription last year. It is a wonderful feeling to return to buy from the same coffee producers each year. I think of it somewhat like wine through its vintages. I get to feel the sense of a coffee more fully, as well as gain a greater understanding of the producer's processing style.
We purchase most of our small lot Colombian coffees from Caravela — an importer in Australia, as well as an exporter in Colombia. They are a vertically integrated company with one of the most comprehensive understandings of the Colombian coffee market. So, as an exporter, they have been able to maintain their steady relationships with their producers during the turbulence in the current coffee market. They have done something that most exporters have failed to do, and that is, build trust. They pay great premiums for quality, have clear expectations and have the infrastructure to market the coffees more thoroughly to fetch the best prices for producers.
We love working with them because they are a breeze to work with. There is also a piece of mind knowing that the coffee quality is unchanged during such market disruption. Furthermore, each coffee comes from Caravela with a traceability ledger to ensure accountability from all sides. In other situations, there are many producers that have stopped producing quality-focused coffee because the base local price is so high, that they can sell at the local market for much less labour and effort without putting in the necessary care. Caravela's relationships with producers have kept the standards and the flow of coffee steady. It is not without cost, however. This coffee's price per quality is up 37% from this time last year. We also expect the prices to stay high for some time.
We are grateful and lucky to be able to offer coffees like Faber's.
Enjoy!
Kindest regards,
Ben
