Felipe Cahuachinchay, Peru
As a Gesha variety, this coffee requires little introduction. It is a coffee we sourced very early in the Peruvian coffee harvest. It took a lot of work to get it here, though, with the classic issues associated with shipping coffee halfway across the world — local logistics, container availability, and the timing of other buyers trying to get into their shipment first.
Felipe has dedicated a lot of his farm to the Gesha variety. He states that he has mainly done this to focus on the quality that his farm is capable of. You can imagine that if you have only a certain amount of arable and fertile land, you would want to fill it with a crop that yields a strong income. Peru has some amazing terroir potential, and we are seeing more and more quality-focused producers coming onto the scene. The standard of microlots has been growing year on year, and it has been incredible to watch.
We feel that Peru is becoming an origin to watch for incredibly clean and expressive coffees from a diverse selection of varietals. An origin that has a lot of washed coffees, as it leans on the terroir and varietal to express the quality and steers away from heavy processing to influence the profile. We love this purist approach and tend to be drawn to these types of coffees most.
Take care,
Ben
