Gesha Variety Select Lot, Luz Helena, Colombia — December 2023

DECEMBER SUBSCRIPTION

Hope this email finds you well!

This month we splashed out and decided to share the most expensive coffee we have ever bought!

Gesha Variety Select Lot — Luz Helena, Colombia

We shared in an Instagram post what was so special about this coffee, and for us it comes down to how small and interconnected the coffee industry is as a whole.

We bought this coffee from an exporter, Carlos from Cofinet, who frequents our cafe and roastery. He has always shared with us his passion for coffee. He himself comes from three generations of coffee growers and his father and mother are farmers in Colombia. This coffee is his mum's coffee. He was really excited for us to purchase this lot so that he could come by and taste it for himself.

This connection is one of the things that makes this coffee extra special, but it is not the only thing. The Gesha variety was originally from the village of Gesha in Ethiopia. But it wasn't really discovered until it was accidentally stumbled upon in Panama after seedlings were taken to Panama for planting and experimentation purposes. It was found to be extremely different from everything else that was currently being grown in Central America. It has a pronounced delicate, citric and floral profile. I've had the chance to taste some of the most amazing Geisha profiles from Panama. I am always curious to taste Geisha varieties from other countries and to see whether or not they can compete in producing the same outstanding cup profile.

Luz's coffee is a beautiful example of how silky and clean this profile can be. It is a very delicate coffee, and a real pleasure to be able to get to know in the roasting process, and to now be able to share with you all in the subscription.

I hope you really enjoy this month's coffee to finish out the year!

Ben
