Imbachi Familia, Colombia — April 2024
APRIL SUBSCRIPTION
Hey subscribers,
When preparing our release for this coffee, we asked Caravela for the best way to represent it. This is an important part of our process, because many times the coffee may not be represented in a way that benefits the producer and their future harvests.
Imbachi Familia, Colombia (Pink Bourbon)
As it was requested, we went with 'Imbachi Familia'. This is due to the family-inclusive approach that Carlos, the father, has towards the coffee and his family's connection to it. Carlos is a leader and has built quite the name for himself, both within his local community and internationally. Furthermore, he has allowed his kids to take initiative and ownership of the land and the coffee production process from a young age. As Carlos has taken a step back in the farm's operations in recent years, the kids have taken primary roles in the production of a coffee, from start to finish, all the while contributing to the family's coffee 'brand' and legacy, Imbachi Familia. The distinction of making their coffee branded after the family ensures the strength of the name recognition in the coffee industry, but also helps secure buyers for their lots. Yan, Carlos's son, is responsible for producing this Pink Bourbon microlot that we have purchased. We are really happy to see all Carlos's kids building up and maintaining the Imbachi coffee name. This could be a peek into what smallholder coffee-producing families may need to cultivate, their own 'brand' for buyers to better recognise. The other really notable thing is the way that Carlos has fostered the family environment to build a bunch of young pioneers to enter the industry. Getting the next generation of coffee growers involved and passionate, something that the Imbachi family beautifully embodies, is no doubt necessary for the future of coffee.
Kindest regards,
Ben
