Kahunyo, Kenya — October 2025

OCTOBER SUBSCRIPTION

Kahunyo, Kenya

This is the first time we have purchased a Kenyan coffee from the Kahunyo mill. We saved the very last batches just for our subscription members.

We always leave one spot open in our Kenyan coffee purchasing plan, and this year Kahunyo was our top choice.

In today's coffee world, full of experimental options, there is no denying that a classic washed Kenyan coffee remains one of the most desirable profiles. Coffee-producing regions and countries looking to elevate their coffees' status often try to maximise the inherent strengths of most Kenyan coffees — consistency, clean profiles, distinct expression, high quality and abundant acidity, and unmistakable sweetness.

Kenyan coffee is also an example of how a government's involvement in a country's export can be helpful in creating a name for products and their origin. Many things are regulated from the top down, including varieties, process standards, access to fertilisers, and how coffee is bought and sold through the national auction process.

The two main takeaways are that Kenya continues to be one of the most revered origins for its distinct and inherent qualities, and that these attributes consistently set Kenyan coffee apart in the specialty coffee world. The appearance is that the government tries to safeguard the industry due to the export value. It's obvious that government involvement in open trade isn't always a good thing, but in this case, it has helped shape a flavour profile and quality that we love.

Hoping to see Kahunyo's coffee around again next year, maybe it will wow us again and steal that open spot in our Kenya line-up.

Best regards,
Ben
