Ruther Quispe, Peru
Ruther is a farmer that colours outside the lines. His story starts like most, inheriting a farm from his parents, starting with his grandparents moving to the area of Ocobamba, Peru many years ago. They were advised against growing coffee in the region and told it was not viable. This is where this family of coffee growers starts to become more interesting.
Against their advice, the family planted coffee and started getting their heads around the detailed aspects of becoming coffee producers. Over the years they kept growing coffee, getting better at it with each harvest. They also kept evolving their processing methods to more rigorous ones, resulting in higher-grade coffees.
The final thing that really sets this farm apart is the singular focus on quality that they have made a priority. Ruther now runs the farm, and it is currently primarily filled with the Geisha variety — a rarer, low-yielding type that produces a great cup profile when cultivated and processed correctly.
Ruther's focus is on super-premium grades of coffee and he is operating as a boutique coffee farmer. From a family growing coffee in a 'non-coffee' zone, to a producer that is paid very high prices for extremely elegant and complex coffees. Ruther seems to always have his finger on the pulse, so it will be interesting to see the coffees he produces in the years to come.
