Oscar grows his coffee at Finca El Laurel, in the small community of Las Delicias in the east of Honduras. He started with half a hectare that his father gave him and slowly bought more land over the years. It's the kind of story I really love about coffee, one person building something patiently, harvest after harvest.
Oscar's coffee is Parainema, a rust-resistant variety, and that matters. Leaf rust has hit farmers in this part of the world really hard, and Oscar had to battle it on his own farm. He also changed how he processed his coffee. Before the community moved to washed processing, quality control wasn't a big focus. In 2017 his washed Parainema won Honduras' Cup of Excellence and sold at auction for US $124.50 per pound, a record at the time.
